Careful out there drivers, New York state is cracking down on drinking and driving. In New York State, a second drunk driving offense within ten years of the first offense is automatically a felony charge. A typical DWI charge in New York can cost well over $12,000 in fines after you have paid bail, fines, fees, insurance and more.
While drinking a few beers can be fun, drinking and driving is not a joke. Mother’s Against Drunk Driving (MADD) estimate that an average of 300,000 people drive drunk each day of the year. What can you do to prevent drinking and driving?
4 Ways To Prevent Drinking and Driving
- Don’t drink and drive yourself and always choose a designated driver. The best way to prevent drinking and driving is to plan in advance. If you know your friends typically say they will drive home but drink regardless, choose to be the sober driver. In the end, skipping those few drinks is far more worth it. By designating a sober driver, everyone can feel good knowing they have a safe ride home.
- Have a backup plan. If you intend to be sober at a party and drive but a few drinks get to you more quickly than you expected, have a backup ride. There is no shame in calling a cab or a rideshare to get home safe. The cost of a taxi is FAR less expensive than the costs of a DUI.
- Be a good host. If you are hosting a party with alcohol, take everyone’s keys when they arrive and make sure not to get everyone too drunk to drive. Gathering everyone’s keys in advance and storing them in a safe spot is easier and less awkward than trying to take away someone’s keys after they have been drinking. If you have to be harsh with a friend, don’t worry they will thank you later even if they are upset at the moment. You will never regret saving someone’s life.
- Buy a portable breathalyzer to have on hand. These devices are readily available and relatively cheap and wise to carry. Even if you only had a drink or two always test before you drive, you never know if you could be over the line more than you thought. If you are at 0.05 percent or higher, sit back down, eat something and wait to drive until you blow lower.
